The WMA Declaration of Helsinki is an ethical guideline of the World Medical Association (WMA) for conducting medical research involving human participants. It was first adopted in 1964 and most recently updated in October 2024. The declaration stipulates that the rights, welfare and dignity of participants must be given top priority. Among other things, it calls for the informed consent of participants, the minimisation of risks and the assurance of transparency and fairness in research. The current version also places greater emphasis on the protection of vulnerable groups and the responsibility of researchers to ensure that benefits and risks are distributed fairly.
